The Masterpiece Bedspread

For many centuries, Calabria Italy was the Silk Capitol of the world, Silk being produced using a secret ritual one day at a time.

The ritual began with the silk cocoon being wrapped in a cotton cloth, then wrapped in a piece of men’s clothing, and finally the women of the time placing the cocoon in their cleavage for warmth, as the silk slowly unravel from the warm body temperature. By repeating this process enough silk was harvested to create bed sheets, table cloths, blankets, and other silk products.

In typical Calabrian tradition, bed sheets, blankets, and table cloths were passed down by each generation to the women of the family. The women of each Calabrian family were give a "corredo" (a package of household items) by their mothers or grandmothers. Sister Anna's grandmother gave this "corredo" to her mother when she wed her husband.

When sister Anna grew older her mother would express much excitement in gifting her daughter a corredo. Unfortunately, her mother fell ill, passed away, and was never able to gift the corredo to her daughter. After many years, Anna's father fell ill and she desperately devoted herself to religion and became a nun.

When a woman becomes a nun, the monastery order absorbs their belongings and assets, dispersing them to families in need. Before this was to happen, Sister Anna sold this bed sheet to help pay for her father’s medicine.

Sister Anna wanted to fulfill her mother’s wishes and make a wife happy with this bedsheet.

Made in Calabria presents this original masterpiece "The Silk Nun."
